Planning a Nutritional Education Program

Planning a Nutritional Education Program Nutrition Education Needs Majority of female prisoners have the thought of whether they will have enough food for themselves or for their families due to their incarceration. Half of them were incarnated most of their life and did not know what had happened outside those walls, so they might not be knowing how to shop and where to get food, lacking the skills to cook a meal, and do not know anything about food assistance programs (1). They were so used of having people to cook for them and because of restricted time they were not able to have much physical activity. The usage of literacy sources such as nutritional pamphlets and recipes could enable the prisoners to cultivate a healthy diet with regular physical activities. Preventing them from any nutrition-related chronic disease and help them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Implementing and developing intervention that focuses on skill building and developing healthy lifestyle that incorporate good nutritional practices and physical activity (1). In addit ion, implementing education program on portion sizes and calorie estimation, healthy food purchasing with budget, cooking classes and even food sanitation classes, as well as focusing on healthy eating with a balance diet helps decrease the risk of chronic disease. In summary, a curriculum for this target population should include lessons on nutrition and childhood nutrition (portion sizes, nutritional balance and choice of food), skill in relation to cooking, budgeting, purchasing, and preparing (safe food handling practices and procedures), and physical activity habits. Social Cognitive Theory The major focus of this nutrition intervention is to apply and develop food management skill and making healthy food choices that include meal planning, shopping, and with limiting budget. By providing this skill to the female inmates allow and ensure them the skills they need by following the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) for behavior change. The implementation of this theory was used by the Healthy Cents curriculum that will be followed for this nutrition intervention (2). SCT is based on the idea of having a comfortable learning environment, goal setting, providing opportunities to participate, and skill development to help foster behavior change (2). There are eight key concepts in SCT which consist of environment, reciprocal determinism, self-regulation, behavioral capability, expectations, self-efficacy, observational learning, and reinforcement (3). In Healthy Cents, this program stresses on using teaching lessons in a series to approach in influencing behavior change, providi ng a comfortable learning environment, dynamic interaction of the person, by knowing a person knowledge and skill, help individuals to apply with the knowledge, group work is encouraged, and goal setting using the information that are being introduced during the lesson (4). Participants are express to improve their nutrition and food shopping skills through this program. The main issue with this target population is the lack of knowledge of how to shop and plan a meal with budget. When these female prison inmates are released and re-enter into the society, they will seek for jobs but with their limited education and low literacy levels the chances of getting employed are lower (5). Without a job, they will not have enough money to buy food. Therefore, with this program enabling them to plan and shop on budget yet having a healthy lifestyle. This intervention started with addressing the reciprocal determinism of female inmates participating in Healthy Cents. In Lesson 1 discussed how to make healthy choices on a budget (2). The objectives about this lesson is to allow individual to practice choosing healthier alternatives familiar food and by teaching them the true meaning of healthy foods. The curriculum emphasis on lecturing, focusing on content, provides information, and asking recall questions, focusing on dialogue learning techniques to generate interest and excitement about the topic lesson (2). Each lesson content activities for the participation to apply, they will be divided into a small group setting to do some group activities such as practicing with the information they learn, food tasting, and goal setting for individual. At the end of the class, the participation get to take home tips or message handouts and recipe they tried in the lesson. Concept Need for Nutrition Education Strategies for Change in Lesson Environment Female inmates may not have access to healthy and nutritious foods because of where they live, lack of knowledge of what foods are considered healthy, and do not have enough money to buy foods. Provide information on what foods that are healthy, provide resources (MyPlate) and handouts that are consider healthy foods, and display ways to shop with budget (L1 -L6) Reciprocal Determinism Majority of the female inmates that are being release are from low socioeconomic with limited access to food, limited nutrition education, low literacy which might cause this populations ability to change. Teach about smart shopping for fruits and vegetables (L1), having healthy snacks that they can afford (L2), developing a food budget (L3-L4), educate in planning a meal (L5), and food shopping on a budget (L6). Discuss the importance of these helps them to change the idea that they able to have a healthy lifestyle with a limited budget. Self-Regulation Many inmates who got release currently not practicing healthy eating habits, may need assistance in selecting appropriate goals, problem solving, monitoring, and even decision making. Aid with goal setting, problem solving, and decision making by encouraging the participants to take home handouts and recipes (L1-L6). Also, encourage participants to use what they learned and participate in the discussion concerning their goals and decision (L1-L6). Behavioral Capability Prisoners need the knowledge and skill to manage their food after they are release, so they need assistance and education on how to prepare healthy meals with alternatively cheap healthy food options. Provide information and demonstration on how to shop and plan healthy meals and snacks in way that is easy to follow (L1, L2, L4-L6). Expectations While many female inmates may know that fruits, vegetables, whole grains are healthy for them, they may not believe that is impossible for them to purchase healthy items with low budget. Introduce new ways to purchase healthy food options and encourage participants to try new recipes. Handouts and recipe sheets will be provided additional information and ideas to try after the lessons (L1-L6). Self-Efficacy The target population may not live at the area where they are easily access to grocery store, therefore, they may not try before some of the foods. Promote and motivate the participants in trying new foods and make some changes with their diets. Handouts and recipe provided with additional recipe of trying other food options. (L1-L6) Observational Learning Inmates are being confined with other prisoner in the cells so they often talked and learned from each other. Lessons are taught through observational learning that involved group problem-solving discussion, listening, seeing, hearing and even asking can engage in and to promote understanding to participants (L1-L6) Reinforcements The target populations may not implement on healthy meals option because after they are released the chances of them getting employed are low (5) therefore lack of financial resources which lead to limited access to healthy food. Having low-income which eligible them to participate in food assistance programs. Inform the participants about food assistance programs can help them to access and choose foods with higher nutritional quality (L3). Curriculum The Healthy Cents program in an extension of Food Supplement Nutrition Education (FSNE) by University of Maryland. It is published in the year 2015 and is funded by United States Department of Agricultures SNAP-Ed. This curriculum is designed for adults, parents/fathers/mothers with low-income individuals and families who have limited food resources, limited budget to purchase and prepare healthy food at home. This program combines nutrition education and food resource management principles to encourage limited resource families to make healthy food choices that include making healthy choices on a budget, decreasing food expenses, developing a food budget, planning a meal, and food shopping on a budget (6). The curriculum links tools and methods for improved food resource management with USDA nutrition messages to stretch food dollars and encourage healthy food choices using MyPlate (6). These lessons were developed using the Social-Cognitive Theory. The program was created to last f or 60 minutes per lesson and with the total of 12 lessons. The lesson will be started off with the whole group then will be divided into smaller group of 4 participants each for discussion and activities. Educators able to easily follow along with the lesson plans because it is well-organized format. In the curriculum, there are handouts for the educators about materials that they need and things that are require for each lesson. There is a free downloadable file called Healthy Cents from the USDA website with all the complete information needed to facilitate the lessons. The lesson will inform about who, why, lesson length, where, and what about each topic, materials and supplies that are needed for the class, things to say and side notes for the educators, discussion questions for the participants, activities that will be doing for each lesson, new recipe to try, as well as handouts for the learners. After taking a sample handout from the take home tips, the handout was found to be a 4.3 Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level on Microsoft Word. However, not all handout contains the same literacy level. One of the handout has a grade level of 8.9. Some of the handouts are appropriate yet some is not appropriate for the target population, because with their limited education and low literacy levels (5) and about 68% did not receive high school diploma (7), it will be hard for them to comprehend the harder and higher literacy information on their own. It is important to point out that Healthy Cents contain total of 12 lessons in the curriculum. In this assignment, it will be shorten to 6 lessons that are relevance to this target populations needs. Everyone is provided with a copy of handout about the lesson and recipe to bring home with them. Lesson 1: Making Healthy Choices on a Budget. The first lesson stresses the importance about what is healthy food using MyPlate poster and how to afford and shop smartly for fresh produces. The major goal is to able to choose healthier alternatives to familiar foods and able to identify different ways to buy fresh produce using coupons and with limited budget. Lesson 2: Decreasing Food Expenses. The objective of this lesson is to help individual or families to buy healthy snacks that are affordable. Participants will compare the cost of buying individually packaged snacks to bulk package, make their own snacks and understand that snacks can be affordable to made at home and healthy. they will also practice to read nutrition facts labels to identify healthy foods. Lesson 3: Developing a Food Budget. This lesson is intended to teach the participants to choose between food needs and food wants also developing a plan on estimation food expenses. The participants will learn the 5 food groups that made up of a healthy plate and learn to plan for monthly food budget. They will play a board game that related to the lesson and try some new food that they can make for themselves. Lesson 4: Community Food Assistance Programs. Participants will have the opportunity to get resources and examine the food assistance programs that are available in the community. Practice saving money using coupons to purchase healthier items. Lesson 5: Planning a Meal to Make Life Simpler. This lesson will allow the participants to know the benefits of meal planning and acquire skills needed for developing a weekly meal plan. The learners will taste a healthy recipe that is simple to prepare. Lesson 6: Food Shopping on a Budget. Participants will learn about shopping strategies Practice using unit price compare to prices at the grocery store. Explore the layout of a grocery store and how to find lower cost items by looking at the products on shelves below eye level. Ask the participants to choose one new strategy to try for saving money at the grocery store. This curriculum is quite complete, however there is a gap in the program. The involvement of others who have chronic disease in the program will face challenges. As we know, from the nutrition assessment that there are quite many of inmates have chronic disease due to the foods being served in the prison and lack of physical activities, therefore some might face the challenge of health-related nutrition concerns. They do not have the knowledge on what kind of food and nutrition that meet the needs of their body. Perhaps modifying the intervention to involve lesson on obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, and other chronic diseases that require certain kind of foods and provide alternative food options to help lower health risks that would make it more complete. Other Program Components As the target population focuses on female inmates, it is important to consider a wider age range. This intervention educates on budgeting and how to shop with limited resources. It educates and incorporation of knowledge for healthy food options. It shows about meal planning and budgeting shopping, however it did not educate about portion sizes. American food culture is well known for big portion; they might have calculated and plan their meal but without the proper portion sizes will cause them to over eat which will lead to overweight and obese. Other than portion size, providing hands-on approach and educating on how to prepare meals will have beneficial to the target population. In addition, studies have showed that female inmates must overcome their unique social, mental, emotional, and physical challenges that prevent their ability to blend smoothly back into the society (8). Therefore, emphasis on discussing healthy lifestyle choices and habits for individual or families to create an environment that allows for positive behavior change (8) is extremely important to this population. Comparing The Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce ET Decorum EST Essa

Comparing The Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce ET Decorum EST  Ã‚  Ã‚   The poems â€Å"The Charge of the Light Brigade† and â€Å"Dulce ET Decorum EST† are war poems. They reflect on two different but equally harrowing events, however the poets portray these events using their own style and the and result is two entirely different views of war. Alfred Tennyson wrote the â€Å"Charge of the Light Brigade† in 1854 and it is about the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean war. Although this battle had no real influence on the outcome of the war it showed the bravery of six hundred British soldiers who charged into almost certain death. The poem itself is a patriotic ballad keeping up with the tradition of the time. The poem is heroic and romantic. â€Å"Dulce ET Decorum EST† was written by Wilfred Owen. It is based on World War 1 in which   Owen himself fought. He tells of the terror of trench warfare and the frantic activity when a gas shell lands. In some ways the two poems are similar for example both poets are obviously writing about war. They use rhyme to get across their point this also makes the poems easier to remember and say. They also use alliteration in â€Å"The Charge of the light brigade† Tennyson tells Cannon to the right of them. Cannon to the left of them. Cannon in front of them Also in Dulce ET decorum EST Owen uses alliteration â€Å"Knock-knead, coughing like hags† and â€Å"Gas! Gas! Quick boys† The poets each use punctuation to emphasise points they deem to be important. Tennyson varies his use of exclamation marks whereas Owen uses more full stops and commas so that when your reading you have slow down and take in what is being said. For example in â€Å"The Charge of the Light Brigade†Ã‚   â€Å"When can their gl... ...rge, this evidently does not concern him.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Finally Owen juxtaposes the idea of war as devastating and the idea of war as heroic when he says â€Å"My friend, you would not tell with such high zest, to children ardent for some desperate glory,† to illustrate the poems ultimate irony –â€Å"Dulce ET Decorum est pro patria mori.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In conclusion I would suggest that although these poems show completely different views we must also remember that they were written in two completely different eras. Tennyson’s view of war was of glory and honour reflecting the views of the population at the time. The great historical tradition of Britain as a military power ruling her empire. Owen writes about World War 1, which was the most devastating war the world had seen at that time, it lasted much longer than any war before it and generally was much more horrific.

International law

The following essay is divided into the following sections: Introduction Definitions Positivism Realism International law Conclusion List of works cited Law is a concept of governance that involves the stipulation and establishment of rules and regulations that are enforced to shape politics, economics, and society. It is put in place by various governmental institutions to govern a community. Law moderates our day-to-day lives with regards to human relationships. It has various oncepts to it; company law, property law, trust law, criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law, international law, and civil law. The study of law allows for review and revision of these rules and regulations ensuring that none is faulty or biased in any manner to a single party of the human population. Definitions The above mentioned concepts are in light of the various activities we indulge in. Contract law deals with regulation of trade terms relating to establishments of contracts.Property law d eals in ownership rights and ownership transfers of personal property. It is often called Chattel law. We can say that Trust law applies to assets that are secured for financial reasons. A concept of law that was not mentioned previously in the introduction part is Tort law. This law enables one to apply for compensation in the case of loss of or damage of personal property (Byers 22). Criminal law establishes the way and reasons for perpetrator prosecution.Constitutional law protects the human rights as well as providing the legal framework for the governance of a state, and its laws. Administrative law presents governmental policies after they have been reviewed by governmental agencies, while international aw controls and manages interstates sovereign decisions in trade and military action regulations (Wallace 198). The law forms a ground on which all mankind is considered equal, and offers Justice systems in equal proportions to every citizen. The three main arms of government a re responsible for creating and enforcing legal systems of a state. These three are the executive, the Judiciary, and the legislature Positivism This legal term, if applied in the context of international relation, asserts that each nation remains bound by the specific international laws it deems fit to undertake as art of its governing criteria, but otherwise, it would be free to act accordingly as it wishes were it not for those laws. It continues to clash in idealism with the assertions of realism and natural law till today (Kelsen 310). Its sociological rationale is that, sensible knowledge is derived from authentic sources like facts, experience, and positive verification. It suggests that law is based primarily on the command of the ruler. †°mile Durkheim redefined Sociological positivism. Later sociologists found it conflicting with their beliefs and came up with the Anti-positivism concept. Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn led to the development of post-positivism. The stipula tion of positivism developed as conflict continued to abound the topic questioning the existence of higher norms of international relations that constrict the freedom of sovereign states (Dixon 341).In the study of legal systems, positivism can be taken to establishment of international law is entirely dependent on natural law, it becomes apparent that positivism and international law come to a conflict on some level (Armstrong 71). Realism This theory is based on the argument that, since all laws are made by human beings, or human beings, then it is subject to human error. On the context of international relations, we can interpret this to imply that in order for a realist to conquer, he must put aside all feelings of morality and friendship, and concentrate on building power on his part.In the context of international law, we can say that it is an act out of selfish interests (Oppenheim 123). Its general rationale is achieving a nation's goal without regard of the other nations. T his prevents the nation from being vulnerable from other ruthless adversaries. Therefore, since war and conflict arise often etween countries, a country should try gain an advantage over the others to make it stronger. Realists dismiss the significance of law in international relations because they believe there is no need to regard an issue that will limit your influence as a leader among your subjects.International law These are the rules and regulations put in place to govern international relations between any two participants or nations. This institution maintains order and legal privileges in the international community. It consists of treaties and long-lasting agreements that primarily concern nations and provinces, rather than private itizens. Some of the rulings made in international cases determine the ruling of other nations in the same premise. This way it can form resolutions between regions globally, ensuring that equal Justice is offered for the wrong-doing of an offe nse previously encountered.International law helps maintain countries in peaceful relations with each other, trying to avoid the outbreak of a war where innocent lives might be lost or destroyed (Shaw 77-79). It only falls short in execution of its enforcement strategies, seeing that the enforcement program is young as well as underdeveloped. The issue only gets more complicated considering the sovereignty and independence of the member countries. No nation would subject itself to legal punishment knowing well that it can avoid participation of the legal program and act as it wishes. It would be binding itself in laws it has helped establish. In this premise, it suggests that positivism disregards the rule of international law (Salli Swartz 112). Realism remains a very important aspect of influential magnitude in colleges that study legal systems. Legal realism teaches political science as a social science and in udicial studies as a specialized discipline. Legal bodies that govern i nternational relations seek to maintain harmony and peace among member countries while trying to prevent possible conflict between two nations regardless of their membership. It requires that the international laws stipulated be considered into the national Justice system to prevent any nation from conflicting with others. Conclusion International law demands that participating countries partake of its Justice systems. Realism asserts that only when a country chooses to bind itself with these rules can it e party to international legal punishment. Positivism asserts that a country can choose to place its needs first before the interests of other countries (Barker 71-72).In this sense the two legal premises conflict in ideology. However, international law demands that democratic states adopt international law into their internal legal law is left to its own discretion (Reus-Smit 101). It only demands that the nation ultimately conforms to the laws. It also insists that regardless of w hat a nation's internal laws dictate, it cannot take them as an excuse to not comply with nternational agreements as stipulated by international bodies like the United Nations.

A Mystery Of Transgender People - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 10 Words: 2915 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/06/24 Category Society Essay Level High school Topics: Transgender Essay Did you like this example? Humans have always set their rules and norms for the society, and if someone decides to be different or unique, they are mostly looked down upon. Throughout the history of the United States of America, numerous groups have been looked down upon because they look different or they have different preferences. For example, African Americans, homosexuals, Native Americans, and now one more group that has been added to this list of groups being discriminated against are transgendered people. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "A Mystery Of Transgender People" essay for you Create order A person is considered to be transgender if their gender identity is inconsistent with the sex they were assigned at birth. Transgender people are nothing new for the society, but they are still looked at like they are not normal. About 1.4 million adults identify themselves as transgender in the United States. Although the transgender population is growing in size and visibility, many experiences of transgender people remain a mystery to the public and scientific community. Transgender people have been facing this discrimination and hatred for so long. They are regular human beings who decided to change something that they were born with and there is nothing wrong with that. Everyone has a right to follow their heart and do what they believe is right for them even if it is to change who they are. Unfortunately, many people do not agree with this and this creates a controversy between what is right and what is wrong. Therefore because of these people, we need more stricter laws to protect transgender community so they can live their lives with peace and also because it is the right thing to do. The laws protecting these people would help reduce the harassment rates and help spread awareness. The citizens of United States of America are entitled to their rights, like freedom of speech, freedom of press and many more. However the law has forgotten about the freedom of choosing their sexuality and gender. Transgender people suffer so much everyday just because they choose their happiness over societies perception of them. Todays modern society does everything possible to make transgender peoples lives filled with harassment/abuses, hatred, which leaves them with nothing but attempting suicide. The 2015 US transgender survey found that 47% of transgender people are sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime (?Sexual Assaults and the LGBTQ community). Almost half of the transgender population deals with assaults every day of their lives and there are no laws protecting them because its not considered a real problem. In todays world people seem to be okay with the idea that almost 50 percent of the transgender people are abused, harassed almost every day of the ir lives. Living a normal life is never easy for a transgender person. In this society there are people who came out as a transgender and are still supported by friends and family that live happy. Even a simple thing as using a public restroom is like hell for transgender people. Entering a bathroom can come with anxiety because all they can think about is safety and health issues. According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey conducted in 2011, they received responses from more than 6,000 transgender people, it was found that over half (53 percent) of them have claimed to have experience harassment not only in bathrooms, but other public accommodations as well such as hotels and restaurants and 10 percent of trans people have reported to have been physically attacked while at these facilities. Thirty-two percent of transgender people said they limited the amount they ate or drank at least once in the previous year so they did not need to use a public restroom. Eight percent repo rted having a kidney or urinary tract infection, or another kidney-related medical issue, because they avoided restrooms ( Trotta). These findings reveal a very disturbing amount of discrimination and hatred toward transgender people. These numbers reveal how much pain transgender people have to go through everyday without many people knowing about it. In places without strong anti-discrimination protections, transgender people can sometimes face criminal penalties for using a restroom that is consistent with their gender identity. In Dallas, for example, a transgender woman was ticketed for disorderly conduct in 2012 for using the womens restroom at a hospital. An Idaho transgender woman in 2013 was informed by the police that she was unwelcome for the next year at a local supermarket, because she had used the womens restroom there (?Know your rights: transgender people and the law, 2018). No human being deserves to be treated with so much hatred even if they changed their gender that they were born with. This discrimination does not just take place in bathrooms or public places, but it has also made its place in the workplace. In a study Equalities review, transgender people with jobs were surveyed and many respondents have experienced harassment from co-workers and employers. Nearly 29 percent of the group experienced verbal abuse and harassment in the workplace environment, and about 4 percent received physical abuse. They go through even harder times with families, friends, and at public places, and if thats not enough, they also go through harassments at work too. Sometimes they are lucky to still have a job even with all the bullying and harassment because many would just fire them. The transgender unemployment rate is three times higher than the national average and it is not surprising because there are no federal laws barring employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In fact, in 30 states workplaces fire transgenders only on the basis that they are trans gender (?2017 workplace equality fact sheet). A job is everyones main source to feed themselves and their families but transgender people are more likely to get fired just because of their gender identity. Transgender people need to sustain their own lives as long as possible, and for them to be denied of that right and silenced because of their minority factor is one of the major reasons that people need to be more aware of what transgender people go through. The discrimination and the hate that the transgender people get from the society is wrong and that affects their health too. These health concerns that the transgender people face are due to the minority stress which is characterized by negative social attitudes, abuse, rejection, and unfair treatments. Due to the minority stress, they are at a risk of emotional abuse, physical or sexual violence, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The minority stress paradigm was developed to address the stresses that accrue to gender and sexual minorities as a result of higher rates of stigma and discrimination. According to the minority stress theory, gender? and sexual?minority status is a fundamental cause of discrimination and health disparities because it is socially stigmatized and entails disadvantage (Sassler). While approximately 6.7 percent of the general United States population suffers from depression, nearly half of all individuals who identify as transgender experience these issues. Ov er 41 percent of trans men and women are estimated to have attempted suicide † a rate thats nearly nine times as high as the rate of other Americans (Schreiber). The life of an adult transgender is already hard filled with abuse, rejection, harassments, and in the end depression. While this wasnt enough, transgender youth arent safe from this oppressive environment either. In schools they are a subject to constant discrimination, from policies and administrations who fail to fight for them from severe bullying by other students. There are numerous transgender kids who are getting bullied at school, facing rejection, and are attempting to take their own lives. Almost 50 percent of transgender teens have taken their lives (Ettachfini). In September 2016, the parents of Marilyn Morrison, an eight-year-old transgender girl, made the decision to pull her out of school after her complaints of constant harassment were met by no response from the schools administration. The child described the school as a horrible, horrible place where teachers refused to accept her chosen name and where she was denied bathroom rights. Ash Haffner, a 16-year-old trans boy took his life after enduring years of bullying, according to his mother. Another was 16-year-old Taylor Alesana, who not only spoke out about the harassment she experienced on her YouTube channel, but who also reported it to school officials. In the end, its effects were too devastating for Alesana to face everyday. There are many heartbreaking stories of transgender kids who lost the fight and decided to end it. They never got a chance to enjoy their precious life just because the people around around them were acting inhumane. Transgender kids feel less safe and less supported. A report by the National Center for Transgender Equality found that transgender individuals reported retrospectively high rates of harassment, assault, and sexual violence when they had attended Kâ€Å"12 schools. According to Bullying Statistics, transgender students are five times more likely to miss school out of fear of bullying. In todays modern society where everyone should be accepting of one other, its really difficult if our country leaders do not support or tolerate our transgendered people. President Trumps administration is weighing a move to define gender as strictly biological, denying the very basis of transgender identity and adding that theyre unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, ( Washington Post). It will almost be as if transgender people do not exist because they never had or will never have any laws protecting them. California is seen as one of the most liberal states in U.S in regards to lesbian, gays, and transgender rights, which have received national recognition since the 1970s. As of the year 2013, California has been the only state to have passed a law allowing transgender students to pick bathrooms and sport teams to join. Gender discrimination in employment is a violation of California state and federal law. Under California law, the Gender Nondis crimination Act and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act, it is illegal for an employer to discriminate based on gender, including gender identity and gender expression (Acevedo). Most support for LGBT rights can be seen in the largest cities, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, as well as many cities on the Pacific coast. Recent polls have indicated that a large majority of Californians support same-sex marriage. New California regulations recently took effect that specifically address protections for transgender persons, including equal access to use of facilities such as restrooms. Californias Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) already prohibits discrimination or harassment against applicants or employees who identify as transgender, regardless of the persons sex assigned at birth ( Worsinger and Lee). It is against the law in California to discriminate against someone based on their sexuality. In fact the new rules specify that employers must honor an employees request to be identified by a preferred gender, name, or pronoun, including gender-neutral pronouns (Worsinger and Lee). Even though California is one of the biggest states to support transgender people, a disagreement can still be seen locally. In the Central Valley, Clovis school district seemed to have some different opinions on the issue of equality for transgender people. Clovis Unified parents are pressuring the school board to separate transgender students from the general student body in bathrooms and locker rooms, despite federal and state laws that protect those students rights. Private bathroom trailers are being installed at two schools for now, and the district will monitor their use to determine if they are needed districtwide. This summer, the district spent thousands of dollars to transform unused shower space into private changing stations after hearing related concerns about locker rooms. But one group known as ?Stop the madness claimed that it was not enough. They urged to repel the law as it is a matter of safety. One of the members stated Since Obama came in, its been all about equ ality. This whole equality thing has trickled down now into the education system, and its creating a mess. The group believes that the district installing trailers is just a ?band aid approach and will only perpetuate bullying. Either way, its discrimination. The ideal plan would be to forget separate bathrooms and go back and fight the state and repeal the law This is a safety issue. My girls dont want to be put in that situation where a male is changing in their locker rooms or can come into their bathroom. said one of the parents. Local transgender advocates showed their support for the districts privacy accommodations. Clovis Unified spokeswoman Kelly Avants said that the accommodations are for any student who wants privacy. Every parent in the district meeting wanted the best for their children and just wanted them to be safe and away from bullying. The world around us is changing. The laws are changing. Its a tough situation to figure out how we maintain our high standards and also be inclusive and follow the laws and I think where the board has struggled is communicating with the c ommunity stated Steven Fogg an ophthalmologist and Clovis Unified parent who is also running for the school board. As the school board is only focusing on the price for new bathrooms and privacy space, the parents are thinking about their kids and want whats right for their kids. Discriminating against other groups and people have always been a part of the American history. Transgender people are nothing new to our society and now its time to stop hating them and accepting them for who they are because they are just normal people. As this hatred has been going on for a long time, it will not be an easy step and will take time, but something needs to be done. The families and friends are the first step in helping this problem. Everyone needs emotional support from their friends and family and so transgender people need and expect the same love and support from their friends and family. The hate and rejection that is sent towards them from the close ones hurt the most and that should stop. Instead the family and the friends should be the best support system they can ever have. Friends and families should always be there for them and speak up if something wrong is going on with the transgender people. As they get more support, transgender people can find more co nfidence and actually be a little happy in their lives. Receiving any support from friends and family will decrease the suicide and depression rate for transgender people. Transgender people have always been casted away in the shadows when the rights of the LGBT community have been brought up. They need their own identity and people need to know about transgender people out of the LGBT group. Surprisingly, many people cant even define what transgender means, but this can change. Transgender people are normal beings and they perform everyday things just like anyone else, so they shouldnt be treated any less than those around them. Their choice of being male or female should not affect those around them. More people need to stand for gender equality for everyone and show others the damage that the transgender community has gone through in the past few decades. Transgender discrimination is something that cant be ended so easily, some steps can be taken in order to reach the goal of gender equality for all. Even with bringing the change, there will be a lot of people that are skeptical about transgender people but in the end all transgender people deser ve to live a respectable and happy life. Transgender people shouldnt have to go through different things that the rest of the population doesnt go through, and transgender people are suffering daily. More awareness of the discrimination they go through is one step closer to achieving total gender equality. Everyone has the right to be free and follow their hearts. Our founding fathers made sure that the people had rights to protect them. That means that transgender people also have a right to be free and live a life without any abuse or harassment. We as a community have to come together to insure that the government make stricter laws to protect transgender people and also help enforce the laws. Not only do we need laws that protect transgender people nationally but also locally and state officials need to make sure that that everyone feels safe and protected. This will hopefully motivate others to understand these people and treat them just like normal people. Furthermore, school authorities need to make sure that they are creating a safe environment for every student and helping to create a safe environment for everyone. Children should be taught to be respectful and more understanding early on in hopes so they can help change this experience for the generations to come. With the ne w laws in place, suicide rates will go down and they can enjoy their precious life with protection. With more awareness, acceptance, and new laws, the transgender community will feel welcomed and comfortable. The amount of hate and discrimination they have gone through is wrong and enough. Our transgender community should be treated just like normal human beings with equal rights as everyone else. A change will institute a new way of thinking and more people will accept our transgender community. They should be allowed to use public bathrooms, go to school without worrying about bullying, and just be themselves. Optimistically, transgender people will never have to avoid public restrooms just to avoid harassment. They should be able to walk outside confidently and walk without any fear.
